Coastal South Carolina supports some of the most intact coastal and maritime ecosystems on the east coast with large conservation efforts in the ACE Basin, “one of the last great places on earth”, just south of Charleston, while over 50 miles of coastline encompassing several state Wildlife Management Areas and Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge north of Charleston comprise a Western Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve Network site. Coastal South Carolina supports hundreds of species of breeding, migratory, and wintering bird species which make it one of the most sought-after areas in the southeast for access to spectacular birding. Nearly 2 million coastal acres are protected through federal and state ownership and through conservation easements on private properties, all directed toward conservation of wildlife in the state. Up to 350 species occur coastally and all seasons provide special opportunities for observing the great diversity of birds in South Carolina.
