A Splash of Color: Painting birds using liquid watercolors
Presented by: Christina Baal, Sponsored by Drawing 10,000 Birds Date: Sunday, May 10 Time: 8 AM - 12 PM Location: Maumee Bay Lodge (Mainsail Room) Fee: $45 Registration Required: Yes Limited to 12 participants
Painting the experience of watching birds using liquid watercolors is fun! It involves movement, splatters, dripping, blotching. It does not always follow rules and mistakes can become important parts of the painting. The spirit of each bird, and its energy, becomes more important than anatomical accuracy, which means that one does not need a background in art to use these fun techniques!
This workshop will focus on using liquid watercolors to paint spring warblers and each participant will create and take home a piece of art! Visit Christina Baal of Drawing 10,000 Birds by clicking here.

This workshop is open to all levels, from curious beginners to advanced artists. Catherine provides unique instruction for each individual and their particular focus or level; for this reason the number of participants is limited to 15 people. The workshop will incorporate working from life and learning the pros and cons of successfully using photographic reference. Bird anatomy and movement will be discussed. Color assessment and sophisticated mixing will be introduced and worked on throughout the workshop. By breaking down the often overwhelming experience of drawing and painting from the world in front us into a few initial exercises, participants will then have a good amount of time to devote to implementing these as we explore the feeders and grounds at Maumee Bay. Participants bring their own materials, and a suggested materials list will be provided in advance. Materials can be as simple as pencil and a sketchbook!

I’ve been teaching how to upcycle paper in to usable beads for three years. I live in Toledo and teach paper bead making at 3 art venues in the area. I use magazines, scrapbook paper, maps, junk mail and other papers and cut them in to strips. I use a tool that my 82 year old Dad makes for my classes to roll those strips in to beads. The beads are then sealed and glazed and then used in jewelry, like the memory wire wrap we will make in class. All materials provided. Those who take the class, leave with their beads, the tool and the bracelet they design. Come bead with me as we use BWIAB Visitor Guides to create one of a kind beads that your friends won’t believe are made from paper!
Looking for Birds, in Paint
Presented by: Christina Baal, Sponsored by Drawing 10,000 Birds Date: Thursday, May 14 Time: 8 AM - 12 PM Location: Maumee Bay Lodge (Mainsail Room) Fee: $45 Registration Required: Yes Limited to 12 participants
Birdwatchers love looking for birds outside. Now, it's time to look for them in paint! This workshop will teach you how to leap right into watercolor by getting messy and having fun without any need for prior artistic training. We will explore the inherent qualities of watercolor paint to move and create surprising shapes using a variety of techniques and household objects. Then, we will explore our personal relationships with color, space, and birds to turn abstract paint blobs into recognizable birds! (Think: Rorschach). This workshop is a fun, no-stress experience that will get messy (so dress appropriately!) while teaching unconventional techniques to artists of any skill level.
This workshop will focus on using liquid watercolors to paint spring warblers and each participant will create and take home a piece of art! Visit Christina Baal of Drawing 10,000 Birds by clicking here.
