OAK HARBOR, OHIO, DESIGNATED
THE WARBLER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!
Black Swamp Bird Observatory Bestows Historic Designation on the Heart of Spring Warbler Migration — and Oak Harbor's Village Council Says Yes!
Every spring, in May, something remarkable happens along the southwestern shore of Lake Erie. During spring migration, the area’s forests, woodlands, and lakeside habitats along Lake Erie serve as a vital habitat for hundreds of different kinds of migratory birds. The most celebrated of all are the eastern wood warblers — a dazzling family of small, often brilliantly colored songbirds making their way north to breeding grounds in Canada and the northern United States.
A remarkable 37 different species of warblers have been documented in the area during spring migration, from the vivid yellow-and-black Magnolia Warbler and the fiery Blackburnian Warbler to the more subtle Tennessee and Nashville Warblers, to name just a few. More than 80,000 birders from around the world converge on places like Black Swamp Bird Observatory, Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, and Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge to enjoy this feathered parade as it stops by.

Now, that magnetic pull has a name to match its reputation. Black Swamp Bird Observatory (BSBO) — the internationally recognized nonprofit research, education, and outreach organization behind the Biggest Week in American Birding, one of the world's largest birding festivals — has officially designated Oak Harbor as the "Warbler Capital of the World." And in a vote that reflects both community pride and a shared vision for the future, Oak Harbor's Village Council has unanimously accepted that designation.
A Place Unlike Any Other
Oak Harbor sits at the epicenter of one of North America's most spectacular wildlife events. Within just a few miles of the village, three world-class natural destinations converge: the Black Swamp Bird Observatory itself, Magee Marsh Wildlife Area, and Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. Together, they form a corridor that ornithologists and birding enthusiasts have long known as the best place on the continent — and arguably the world — to witness spring warbler migration up close. BSBO, which came up with the tagline back in 2010 and has applied to trademark on the phrase "The Warbler Capital of the World," chose to invest that designation in Oak Harbor based on the organization's expertise in both conservation science and destination marketing. The designation is not ceremonial — it is a strategic partnership.
“As the founders of The Biggest Week in American Birding and the organization that built the spring birding tourism season in the region, we’re proud to honor the Village of Oak Harbor with this designation,” said Kimberly Kaufman, Executive Director of Black Swamp Bird Observatory and founder of the Biggest Week festival. “We’ve built this region into one of the most popular birding destinations in the world, and since the two main birding hotspots share an Oak Harbor address, it makes perfect sense to put a pin on the map and leverage that recognition to market the rest of the region and all it has to offer visitors. Oak Harbor leadership has shown a sincere commitment to work with BSBO on bird conservation issues, and we look forward to expanding this dynamic partnership with our hometown.”
A Partnership Rooted in Place and Purpose
When Oak Harbor's Village Council took up the question of accepting BSBO's designation, the conversation was about far more than birds. The village has been actively working to revitalize its downtown — attracting new shops and restaurants, creating vibrant public spaces, and building on the community character that residents cherish. The new birds and wildlife mural completed last summer on the NAPA building at the main intersection in town fully embraces and celebrates Oak Harbor’s connection to the natural world. The "Warbler Capital of the World" designation offers a compelling, authentic identity around which that revitalization can grow.
Under the terms of the partnership formalized in Village Council Resolution No. 06-2026, Oak Harbor and BSBO will work together on collaborative marketing and destination development — drawing visitors into the community, supporting local businesses, and elevating the profile of BSBO's research, education, and outreach mission in the region and beyond. The resolution reflects something the community has long understood: that Oak Harbor's greatest natural asset — its location at the crossroads of one of the world's most remarkable wildlife migrations — is also one of its greatest economic and cultural opportunities.
