Adriana L.
Adriana is a young birder in the class of 2021. She has been in love with nature her whole life, but birds have always been her favorite. She found her love for birds after watching “The Big Year” and has been an avid birder ever since. She is always up for an adventure and learning the most she can about the world around her. Other than birds Adriana is in all of the bands at her high school as a flautist. She is also involved in honors bands and solo performances, in a non-Covid year. Music has also found a special place in her heart.
In the future Adriana hopes to become an outdoor educator. She plans on going to college in Wisconsin and majoring in outdoor education and environmental studies. She believes that if you can introduce even one person to a passion, you have succeeded. |
Angela G.

Angela attends John Hay Early College in Cleveland. She lives with her mom and younger sister along with a cat and a dog. Angela enjoys listening to music, helping people, and cleaning up. She isn’t sure what she wants to be when she grows up, but definitely knows she’d like to work with nature. Angela would love to attend Harvard or University of Michigan after high school.
Angela joined the Bird Nerds looking for a new hobby, something that would also keep her busy. Once she started going to different places to see new birds, she really started enjoying birds. Angela’s favorite bird is a Blackburnian Warbler because of its beautiful color along with its cool nickname, “Fire Throat.” Her favorite birding trip was when she went to Magee Marsh during The Biggest Week in 2019, because she got to see her first Blackburnian Warbler. Even though it was freezing cold that day and missed out on seeing a Kirtland's Warbler.
Once you see your favorite bird, you never forget that first sighting. Being a birder is more amazing because almost everywhere you go you can see a bird and there's a whole world filled with so many beautiful birds to see. “Be like a bird, expand your wings, learn new things, and fly high as you can.”

Kimberly W.
Kimberly attends East Clark elementary school. She lives with her parents, an older brother, and a dog. Some things that she likes to do is travel and go walking. Kimberly’s favorite subject in school is social studies because she likes learning about how the world changes over time and how it stays the same.
Birds are cool because of their varying features. Her favorite birds are Northern Parulas and American Kestrels. The color of parulas is beautiful and kestrels are tiny but mighty. Kimberly’s favorite birding experience was seeing a “Grey Ghost,” also known as Northern Harrier, when a few “Bird Nerds” went to Killdeer Plains. Kimberly also gave up going trick or treating to see her first kestrel and it was all worth it. In the future, Kimberly’s plans are to remain a birder "no matter how old I get." "It is a hobby I will never stop.” One of her future goals is to become a brain surgeon so she can help people live a happy and healthy life. |
The Ohio EPA's Ohio Environmental Education Fund (OEEF) awarded Black Swamp Bird Observatory full funding of $35,000 for our Ohio Young Birders Club expansion.
The OEEF grant fund will enable BSBO to achieve measurable objectives that support the overall goal of expanding and enhancing the OYBC, building a brighter future for bird conservation. Through the OEEF grant fund, the 2021 Biggest Week In American Birding is able to feature student members from the Ohio Young Birders Club. |
